Artistic, inclusive and social project selected by PARTIS - Artistic Practices for Social Inclusion, with the support of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation - Gulbenkian Human Development Programme.

This project is about a generation that includes the youngest among us. Children, and their greatness, are the inspiration behind the project!

Geração SOMA began with 1,200 children (17 classes) from the Padre Bartolomeu de Gusmão School Group and the Vergílio Ferreira School Group, namely 12 classes from the Josefa de Óbidos School, 1 from the Engenheiro Ressano Garcia School and 4 from the Telheiras EB1, also including children with SEN (Special Educational Needs) and their carers (teachers and parents), totalling more than 200 people.

Through artistic practice, at the same time as the work developed by CiM - Dance Company, more than 12 different sessions were developed for each class and 4 “Arte em Movimento” holiday moments with the participation of more than 100 children.

CiM's artistic team, composed of 12 multidisciplinary artists/educators, integrated the curriculum of these classes over a 14-month period by challenging the theme of superpowers and discovering the imagination within each child. It was from this inspiration that 4 characters emerged, based on 4 acronyms, each with their own superpower.

The result of this project, carried out in schools from April 2016 to June 2017, culminated in the stage production EU MAIOR, which featured 4 professional performers and 65 participants, including children, assistants and teachers, accompanied by the Trifonética Orchestra, composed of students from the Articulated Music Education Programme.

The show EU MAIOR premiered on the 9th of June 2017 at the Teatro São Luiz and was seen by over 1,500 people. It was restaged on the 20th of February 2018 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Grand Auditorium in Lisbon to a sold-out crowd! Each superpower takes on a life of its own and transforms vulnerabilities into potential movements through dance and other arts.

Geração SOMA's challenge is to extend the initiative to other schools across the country, replicating the project's integration into the curriculum by selecting classes to participate in a public presentation of the show at the Municipal Theatre/Auditorium with the participation of 30 to 50 students.

Vo'Arte produced the project's documentary, featuring footage from two years of activities that culminated in the show EU MAIOR, and will also release the show's original soundtrack. This project received essential support from ETIC - School of Technology, Innovation, and Creation.

This documentation helps preserve Vo'Arte's heritage and creates a resource that reflects and promotes the work of Good Inclusive Practices in the Performing Arts.

Geração SOMA seeks to raise awareness among children and the entire public school community on the importance of inclusion and accessibility through art and its artistic, pedagogical, therapeutic and integrative role in communities. It also aims to promote efforts to combat social exclusion among communities with fewer opportunities for participation. Geração SOMA draws on the unifying congregating energy of art to encourage individual and social inclusion and to operate in society. The inclusion of everyone begins with the acceptance of each individual, and only in this way can differences and limitations be overcome through the best that each person has to offer.

Workshops & Training

Partner Classes

Throughout the year, CiM - Dance Company, together with its team of dancers/instructors, provides regular dance training through an inclusive approach at partner institutions, fostering proximity, participation, and access to artistic practice. These weekly classes encourage ongoing engagement with contemporary creation, valuing individual expression and collective work within different communities.

The company maintains its regular work with the AFID Foundation and conducts ongoing training with CERCIAMA as part of an inclusive initiative held weekly, reinforcing its commitment to diverse communities.

Some of the initiatives developed in partnership lead to artistic projects, a result of collaborative processes that foster participation and collective creation:

SOMA Generation Masterclass - inclusion through art

This training aims to demonstrate alternative approaches that can be used in the classroom, and how dance and other artistic languages foster moments of creativity, a sense of belonging and empowerment amongst students.

Through the screening and exploration of the documentary Geração SOMA, a film by Pedro Sena Nunes, memories are revealed; yet all memories have a context, a time and a place. This film presents the creative process of the Geração SOMA project, in which various reflections were made. A look back at a world where moments multiply and a box of memories where lived experiences come together to form an unforgettable adventure.

Geração SOMA is an inclusive and social project working with children aged between 5 and 16 from basic education schools in Lisbon, also involving children with special needs and the entire school community, through artistic creation and practice.

Target audience: Kindergarten teachers, teachers in primary and middle/high schools, special needs teachers, and other education related professionals.

Certified Training: Training can be certified when the Plano Nacional das Artes is involved.

Masterclass Crossings: Documentary and Fiction

Cinema is a multifaceted celebration, a significant social event in which learning takes place through the senses.

This Masterclass aims to explore cinema without the constraints of genre. We may speak of documentary and fictional cinema, but cinema itself is one. Thinking about cinema helps us to reflect critically and creatively on life.

While documentary film refers to the ‘real’, fiction leads us to the ‘imaginary’. Both the filmmaker and the viewer are involved in the production of meaning within a film. In this interconnection, the viewer adapts their mode of interpretation, whether fictional or documentary, according to the skills they have acquired. In this sense, it is necessary to continue thinking about cinema.

Target audience: Anyone interested in video and documentary filmmaking. In particular, students and creative professionals, whether or not they are working in the film industry
