About Vo'Arte

Vo'Arte was born out of the desire to produce, promote and enhance contemporary creation through the intersection of artistic languages and the development of national and international projects, fostering exchange, transdisciplinarity and innovation in artistic creation.

It's a project that promotes dialogue and cultural decentralization, contributing to closer relationships between communities and to the development and diversification of audiences. It believes in culture as a space for encounter, critical thinking and social transformation.

With over two decades of artistic, educational and social activity, Vo'Arte develops shows, festivals, exhibitions, installations, performances, films, seminars and programming initiatives involving both established artists and emerging creators, promoting inclusive and collaborative creative contexts.

Since 2007, Vo'Arte has produced CiM - Dance Company, which brings together performers with and without disabilities, championing inclusion as an effective practice in artistic creation.

The organisation is responsible for InShadow - Lisbon Screendance Festival, dedicated to the relationship between body and moving image, and InArt - Community Arts Festival, focused on community-based and participatory artistic practices, conceived as spaces for experimentation, exchange and collective construction.

It develops and co-organizes European projects within the framework of the Creative Europe and Erasmus+ programmes, in collaboration with international partners, researching new approaches to inclusive artistic creation, cultural accessibility and mediation with diverse audiences.

It regularly participates in international networks and platforms, promoting artistic circulation and cultural cooperation, and is currently integrating networks such as Studiotrade, REDIV and REDE - Association of Structures for Contemporary Dance.

History

Founded in 1998, within the context of Expo’98, with the launch of Lugar à Dança - International Festival of Dance in Urban Landscapes, a project inspired by the relationship between dance and architecture and part of the international Cidades que Dançam (CQD) network. The formal establishement of the Vo'Arte Association emerges in this context, providing legal framework for an artistic vision that had been developing since the early 1990s.

The growth of Lugar à Dança over fifteen years consolidated Vo'Arte as a platform for programming in public spaces, bringing together hundreds of national and international artists, promoting artistic circulation and contributing to the development of audiences. From the outset, this experience demonstrated a strong international vocation, combined with an in-depth knowledge of the national cultural landscape and the sustained work with institutions and diverse communities.

Participation in major events such as Expo’98, Expo Zaragoza 2008 and the European Capitals of Culture Porto 2001 and Coimbra 2003, reinforced this transdisciplinary dimension across the fields of dance, performance, cinema and training, while, simultaneously, expanding collaboration and cooperation networks.

In 2007, at a time when it was redefining its path, Vo'Arte deepened its artistic work in contexts of inclusion in a structured way, giving rise to CiM - Companhia de Dança, and consolidating a line of creation that combines art, diversity and social responsibility.

Its work has been recognized with distinctions in the field of inclusion and cultural accessibility, namely the BPI Capacitar Award Honourable Mention (2016), the Acesso Cultura Award in the Intellectual Accessibility category (2015), and the National Inclusion Award in the Culture, Sport and Leisure category (2014), reflecting an ongoing practice that connects contemporary creation, public space and social commitment.
